Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2005 12:16:46 -0400 (EDT) From: Dan Fabricant Subject: Good news on the Arizona fire Dear Colleagues, Steve Criswell had excellent news for us this morning. A powerful thunderstorm soaked the Florida Fire with about an inch of rain last night. The storm knocked out communications with the FLWO Basecamp, and made a big impression on the fire fighters staying on the Ridge. Areas of the fire will continue to smolder for some time, but the fire fighting effort will now concentrate on keeping a watchful eye on the area. Helicopter-borne fire crews will make a thorough aerial survey today. The fire crews on Mt. Hopkins are wrapping up most of their operations, and observatory staff will be allowed back on the mountain in force tomorrow. We are very grateful to the US Forest Service and the fire fighting team for their efforts throughout the fire. Daniel Fabricant and Charles Alcock
