The fire is holding at the bottom of the canyon, but is expected to eventually burn up the hill and over the mountain. The safety officer told me that in the five years he has been on fires with the supervisor who is in charge of protecting the structures on Mt. Hopkins, Don Howard, that Don has never lost a building to a fire. Don Howard told me that the buildings at the ridge are in pretty good shape. The clearing that was performed in the recent past should help quite a bit.
There are crews at the ridge in many places. Some were hosing down the ridge dorm when I was leaving at about 12:30. Fire hoses have been spread out to cover all of the buildings as needed. Fire trucks and their crews are positioning to cover the structures as needed.
2 helicopters continue to drop slurry at a rapid pace. They have covered quite a bit of terrain encircling the summit and ridge. The challenge will be saving the Summit Dorm.
