0: LOCATION

The 1.5m Telescope Control rack is in the chart room behind the 1.5m Control Room. It is located on the right of the room as you enter, past the bookshelves. It contains just two black boxes as you can see in the picture.
The new DFM MDC (Motor Drive Chassis) is mounted at the top, and the PC that runs TCSGalil for telescope control is at the bottom. Both are normally powered on.

1: START UP

If the PC is not on (a rare condition), turn it on. Its power switch is behind the right door (open in the figure) of the PC box. The blue status light is on when the PC is on. The on/off switch is a rocker switch, next to the orange RESET (leave it alone). Close the PC door when done. The PC starts in a few seconds and is quickly ready for you to start TCSGalil.

The power switch for the drives is outlined in the figure. It should be ON. The green light just above it indicates its status. If the PC at the bottom is on but the MDC is not, flip the MDC switch up. The green light shut light up. If it does not, check the power cord to the wall next to the rack. Make sure it's plugged in properly and try again. If that fails, there is an issue with the MDC. In that case, please alert the staff as soon as possible.

The red switch top right on the MDC should only be used as an emergency stop.

2: SHUT DOWN

Normally the MDC and PC remain powered on. If you really need to shut down the MDC, first stow the telescope. Then, just switch the MDC master switch off (outlined in the figure), and if necessary, shut down the PC from Windows under the Start menu. To the right on the dark part of the window, click on Shut Down. If that fails, power down the PC with the rocker switch on the PC box (highlighted in the figure).
