1.2m WAVEFRONT SENSOR

Created 06/28/19 by EF

Deb Woods designed and built a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor for the 1.2m telescope at FLWO. A description of its operation is here (PDF).

I ran the WFS on 06/27/19. The night started iffy and got progressively more cloudy. I managed to obtain about 16 probably useful images.
This is an example of one good image:

Procedure once WFS is mounted:

Adjust electric counterweights, S 00810, N 01791.

Remove one filter, e.g. BH and select that filter on ntcs.

Open CCD shutter.

Run vncviewer flwo48:2 as observer, in any xterm, cd /scratch/observer/woods.

1) Connect guide camera BNC to guide viewer.
2) Connect internet to camera (to router inside chamber).
3) Turn Apogee CCD camera on.
4) Start the WFS GUI: type ./startapogee in ./woods.
5) Pop the temp plots, use ALT-P (or Edit and Properties).
6) Take bias frames.
7) Plug in power to LED, push knob in.
8) Take reference images with the LED (2 sec).
9) Unplug power to LED, pull knob out.
10) Change 1.2m focus to about +2 mm with the assembly pushed up
to the top of its range (knob on the side allows the assembly
to slide up and down).
11) Point telescope to bright star and center star on guider view.
12) Take test image to check integration time (about 10 sec for
    V=5 mag star) and focus.
13) If desired, pop the calibrations window, use ALT-C.

States:
. Knob out: sky, turn off LED (unplug).
. Knob in: LED, turn on LED.
. Bias levels should be about 1400.
. Temp set point -30C.
. WFS guider FOV is about 10x10 arcmin.
